Subcision

A targeted, highly effective procedure to release and smooth depressed acne scars from beneath the skin.

What is Subcision?

A high-level overview of this advanced scar revision technique.

Subcision is a minor, in-office surgical procedure specifically designed to treat atrophic, or depressed, acne scars. These scars (often called 'rolling scars') are caused by fibrous bands of tissue that form under the skin, pulling the surface down and creating a visible indentation.

During the procedure, the area is numbed with a local anesthetic. A special hypodermic needle is then inserted and moved back and forth beneath the scar. This action cuts and releases the fibrotic strands that are tethering the scar down. This not only allows the skin to lift back to a more normal level but also triggers new collagen production in the area, further improving texture and smoothness over time.

Is Subcision Right For You?

This is the definitive treatment for a very specific type of acne scarring.

If you are frustrated by rolling, wavy, or depressed scars that give your skin an uneven texture, subcision may be the most powerful and direct treatment available.

This procedure is likely your best option if:

You have rolling or boxcar-type acne scars with sloped edges.
Your scars appear more prominent in certain lighting due to the shadows they create.
You are looking for a permanent improvement in the depth and texture of your scars.
You are prepared for the post-procedure bruising and swelling, which can be significant.

Questions? We have answers.

Is subcision painful?
The procedure itself is not painful because the treatment area is thoroughly numbed with a local anesthetic. You may feel sensations of pressure or movement under the skin, but you should not feel sharp pain.
What is the downtime really like?
Downtime is the most important consideration for subcision. Significant bruising and swelling in the treated area are expected and normal. The bruising can last for 1 to 2 weeks. We recommend scheduling the procedure when you have some time for social downtime.
Can subcision be combined with other treatments?
Absolutely. In fact, it is often recommended. Subcision is excellent for lifting the base of the scar, and it is frequently followed by other resurfacing treatments like microneedling, CO2 laser, or Radiesse filler to further improve the surface texture and stimulate collagen for the best possible result.
